Sponsored Display Audiences: How to Retarget Shoppers and Reach New Ones

Most sellers pour their whole budget into Sponsored Products and stop there. That covers shoppers who are already searching. Sponsored Display reaches the ones who are not — people who viewed your product and left, and people who have never seen it yet. Used well, it fills the gaps around search. Used carelessly, it quietly burns money.

The two jobs Sponsored Display does

Sponsored Display targets people, not just keywords. It splits into two clear jobs:

  • Retargeting (views remarketing). Show ads to shoppers who viewed your detail page — or similar products — but didn’t buy. These people already know you. They convert at a higher rate, which is why retargeting is usually the first campaign to turn on.
  • Audience reach. Reach new shoppers based on interests, lifestyles, and in-market signals, plus product and category targeting. This is top-of-funnel: more expensive per sale, but it grows your pool of future buyers.

Where it shows up

Sponsored Display ads appear both on and off Amazon — on detail pages, in search, and across third-party sites and apps. That reach is the point: you stay in front of a shopper after they leave the listing, so you are the brand they remember when they come back.

How we’d run it

  • Start with retargeting. It’s the cheapest win. Bring back shoppers who already looked.
  • Add product targeting next. Place your ad on complementary or competitor detail pages where your product is a fair alternative.
  • Treat audience reach as an investment, not a quick sale. Judge it on new-to-brand orders and downstream growth, not on same-day ACoS.
  • Keep budgets separate. Don’t let a broad reach campaign quietly eat the budget your retargeting campaign should own.

Sponsored Display is leverage once Sponsored Products is healthy. It is not a rescue plan for a leaky account.
