Keyword targeting puts your ad in front of a search. Product targeting puts it somewhere sharper: directly on a competitor’s detail page, right where a shopper is deciding what to buy. This is often called ASIN conquesting, and it’s one of the most under-used tactics in Amazon PPC.
What product targeting does
Instead of bidding on search terms, you bid on specific products (ASINs) or whole categories. Your ad then appears on those product pages and in related placements. There are two flavors:
- ASIN targeting — pick exact competitor products to appear on. Precise and aggressive.
- Category targeting — appear across a category, then refine by price, brand, or star rating.
Why it works
A shopper on a competitor’s page is as high-intent as it gets. They want this kind of product and they’re comparing. If your listing is stronger — better price, better reviews, faster shipping — putting your ad right there can win the click at the decision moment.
How to do it without wasting money
- Target products you actually beat. Attacking a competitor with more reviews and a lower price just donates them clicks. Pick matchups you win.
- Defend your own pages too. Run product targeting on your own detail pages so competitors don’t steal the shopper reading your listing.
- Watch conversion, not just clicks. A conquest keyword with lots of clicks and no orders is a sign the matchup is wrong — negate it.
- Refine category targeting hard. Use price and rating filters so you only appear next to products yours can beat.
Product targeting is a scalpel, not a hammer. Aimed at the right pages, it pulls in shoppers at the exact moment they’re choosing.
